Description:

Archaeological Discoveries at Broughton Castle

A Talk by Keith Westcott

North Oxfordshire has a rich heritage stretching back millennia. Broughton Castle was built in around 1300 by Sir John de Broughton, acquired by William of Wykeham in 1377 and passed through marriage in 1448 to his sister’s descendant the wife of the 2nd Lord Saye and Sele, Sir William Fiennes.

Keith Westcott will talk about some of the archaeological discoveries, and their context, that he has made at Broughton, stretching back to Roman times. Keith is a member of TV’s Time Team, and is a respected detectorist, historian and archaeologist. Funded through Historic England, he is the founder of the DIF: Detectorists Institute and Foundation and winner of the 2019 Archaeological Training Forum Award.

This event is to fundraise for The Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell (charity no 1127136) and Banbury Museum & Gallery (charity no 1153109). The Rotary Club of Banbury Cherwell and the Trustees of the Museum are very grateful to Martin Fiennes and Broughton Castle who have made this event possible.
