Benefits of volunteering at Banbury Museum
What is involved?
The current volunteering role available is that of Exhibition Interpreter. Other opportunities may be possible in future.
Volunteer Exhibition Interpreters welcome visitors to the special exhibitions, enhance their visit and helping with orientation and enquiries, where possible drawing out some of the exhibition’s inspiring stories, while also ensuring that visitors aren’t harmed by exhibits and vice versa. During ticketed exhibitions (i.e. most exhibitions) the role includes a smooth process of checking tickets purchased from the museum shop. Our volunteers are ambassadors for Banbury Museum, shaping visitors’ memories of their visit here and hence promoting repeat visits and ‘word of mouth’ recommendation of the museum to family, friends and colleagues.
Most volunteers offer one regular morning or afternoon session each week, though additional sessions are welcome. Some of our volunteers prefer to help by ‘filling gaps’ especially during school holiday periods. Both arrangements are very welcome.
Any previous skills or experience required?
Our volunteers aren’t expected to bring knowledge of the exhibition topics or Banbury’s history, but the current role very much suits a ‘people person,’ comfortable with making conversation. Interest in the area’s history or topics covered by some of the exhibitions would be a bonus.
Please note that volunteers here must be over 18 and staff and volunteers at the museum aren’t able to enter the museum’s ‘Ironstone Art Prize’ competition.
What next if I may be interested in volunteering at the museum?
Please have a look at the role description [link to Role description pdf] and if you would like to explore the idea further please complete a streamlined form [link to application form pdf] and drop this in to the museum marked for the attention of Dale Johnston, or email the form to firstname.lastname@example.org
We will then set up a time that suits you to have an informal chat over a complimentary cuppa at the museum’s café.
If you aren’t sure about completing the form, you are welcome to email any queries to email@example.com and he will contact you.
